Auction ends on February 28th
Francisco de Tassis was the pioneer of the European postal services at the end of the 15th century together with his family. He reached several agreements with the most important European royal families in order to run their postal services. The wealth and the fame of the family grew so fast that they were named princes of Thurn and Taxis (Germany) in 1695. Of course, philately has referred to this character several times, as for example in this 1935 block from Belgium.

Great opportunity for collectors - check out all the Norwegian Bird and Polar Stamps
The Norwegian postal service - Posten Norge - just issued their first set of stamps this year, and these issues are definitely worth a look, as they cover two of the most popular philatelic themes: Birds and Polar motifs.
Great Birds of Prey
The first issue was issued on January 2nd, and consists of three stamps, each depicting a bird of prey. The first stamp, as seen below, is a domestic stamp, depicting the Great Grey Owl.

[table]

The Great Grey Owl is one of the largest owls out there, and it is only slightly smaller than the Eurasian eagle-owl. The Great Grey Owl has fantastic hearing, and it is able to hear the sound of a mouse moving below the snow, from a distance of more than a hundred meters, making it a fascinating hunter. The owl typically lives in or near pine forests in the north, and are mostly familiar in areas such as Alaska and Siberia. However, it can also be found in the northern parts of Norway, and can be recognized by the different shades of gray and brown.
The second stamp of the set depicts a snowy owl, sitting in the snow.

The snowy owl is best known for its role as Hedvig in the Harry Potter movies, where the owl is a steady companion throughout the years. In reality, the snowy owl spends most of its life in the far north, living and breeding around the Polar Circle. The snowy owl is a rare guest in Norway, but occasionally breeding owls are spotted in the furthest northern-most parts of the country. The snowy owl is characteristic with its white appearance, allowing it to blend in well with the environment it inhabits.
The last stamp in the set depicts the rough-legged hawk, which is the most common bird of prey in Norway. It is estimated that between 5,000 and 10,000 rough-legged hawks breed in Norway during especially good years.

The rough-legged hawk has a very distinct screeching cry, which is a familiar sound to anyone, who tends to hike the mountains. The hawk has been fully protected since 1971.
The first stamp is denominated as Domestic, while the other two are denominated at NOK 21 and 48 respectively, and can be found directly at Posten Norge.

Bouvet Island - The most remote island in the world
The latest Norwegian stamp issue, issued on February 16th, is devoted to the Norwegian Bouvet Island, which is considered the most remote island in the world. The island is situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, and only measures 50 square kilometers. The island is almost completely covered in ice, and is completely uninhabited.
The island was first sighted in 1739 by a french explorer, but it wasn't until 1927 that someone set foot on the island, when the captain of the first Norvegia expedition, H. Horntvedt, claimed it for Norway.

The two stamps of the set each depict one of the animals that inhabit the area - the chinstrap penguin, and the Antarctic fur seal. Over the summer, tens of thousands of penguins nest on Bouvet Island, which is also home to more than a thousand fur seals.
The animals can live in relative peace on the island, as it was marked a nature reserve in 1971, and is now only visited by the Norwegian Polar Institute once in a while for their regular expeditions.
The two stamps are denominated at NOK 24 and 38 respectively, and can be found through Posten Norge.

Thematically interested? Posten Norge can help!
Both Birds and Polar stamps have always been popular stamp motifs, and this is also the case for Norway. If you are looking to improve your collection, you are in luck. The Norwegian postal service holds a large number of older issues of stamps, which they offer for sale. These stamps were collected by the Postal Museum in Oslo, but when this was relocated to Lillehammer in 2003, parts of the previously collected stamps are now being sold by Posten Norge.
If you are interested in Birds on stamps, you can see all the issues form Norway here, where you can also buy them directly from the postal service.

If you are interested in Polar Stamps, you can find everything the Norwegian postal service has ever issued, right here.

We start out with an issue from 2017, when the Italian Postal Service released this exquisite stamp.

The stamp depicts the Astronomical Observatory of Padova, which is housed in an ancient castle dating back to the 13th century. The observatory is located in the tower, which was erected in the 14th century, while the castle was being re-built. The tower was converted into an observatory in 1767, and has functioned a such for 250 years now.
The stamp depicts the castle in the foreground, and showcases a spectacular astronomical view at the center, allowing the mind to wander free, and speculate all the wonders of outer space.

USSR - Lenin
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or USSR, was a socialist union in Eurasia with the most prominent country being Russia. The USSR existed between 1922 and 1991 after which it fell apart.
The influence of Lenin
It is hard to mention the USSR without mentioning Vladimir Lenin. Born into a well-off middle-class family, life could have turned out very differently for Lenin, but after his brother was executed following an assassination attempt on Alexander III in 1887, Lenin embraced revolutionary socialism.

After being expelled from his university for participating in anti-tsar protests, Lenin moved to St. Petersburg in 1893, where he became deeply entrenched in the Marxist movement. After being exiled for sedition, Lenin moved to Western Europe, where his involvement with the Marxist movement grew ever stronger.
Even though the movement ran into numerous obstacles and setbacks, Lenin never gave up on the Marxist movement, and in 1917 during the February revolution, the socialists succeeded in ousting the Tsar. In October of the same year, Lenin and his Bolsheviks played a leading role in the October Revolution, where the Bolsheviks took over the government of the country.

[table]
[table=270]
[table=270]

From 1917 and until his death in 1924, Lenin worked hard to incorporate the ideals of Marxism into the newly established Soviet Union, and they redistributed land to peasants, nationalized banks, along with all large-scale industry.
Lenin's health rapidly worsened, and in 1924 he died, leaving the Soviet Union in the hands of his successor, Joseph Stalin. Lenin's work towards realizing the Marxist dream of the Socialist Soviet Union, has earned him hero-like status in the Socialist parts of the world, and especially in the USSR, Lenin was viewed as the hero of the people and the champion of socialism.
His influence is easily seen in philately as well. For many years, stamps were issued in remembrance of Lenin and his death, and he was a fixed part of the definitive issues in early Soviet Union. And whether or not we agree with his actions, we cannot argue about the influence Lenin has had on history.
We have only scratched the surface of Soviet history here, and we have barely touched upon the philatelic wonders of the USSR, of which so many exist. We encourage you to check out the stamps of the USSR in our catalogue right here.

Beautiful Recent Issues
Austrian Artists
This beautiful issue from Austria was issued on August 24th, and consists of four different stamps, each depicting a famous Austrian, who died in 1918.

The four stamps depict three artists, Koloman Moser, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and one architect, Otto Wagner. Each of the four had a distinctness to their creations, which made their works of art both unique and exceptional. All four of them died 100 years ago, but while they died around the same time, they had lived vastly different lives - Egon Schiele died at the age of 28, while Otto Wagner was 76 at the time of his death.
All four stamps are denominated at 80c, and can be found in our catalogue.
American Landscapes
This issue from the 4th of July consists of 20 different stamps, each depicting a beautiful natural landscape from all around the US.

The beautiful landscapes include snapshots such as Sunlight on Death Valley National Park, Three Finger Mountains in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Washington, and a double rainbow over a field near Grove City, Kansas. Our favorite is of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in Arizona, with the sun halfway hidden in the background, by the natural rock monuments.
You can find all of the stamps right here, in our catalogue.
