EUROPA 2018 - Bridges
As usually, the members of PostEurop have an issue with a common theme this year. In 2018 the common theme is Bridges - a theme that we are genuinely excited about.
At least a hundred EUROPA stamps have been issued this year, and while some are very traditional, others are taking an alternative approach to the topic.
Some issues, such as the one from Faroe Islands, depict bridges in the country in the most original form - as photographs of the actual bridges.

Despite its size, infrastructure is immensely important in the Faroe Islands, as they have to deal with an at times inhospitable mountainous environment, so this issue suited them well.
The bridges depicted are the bridge connecting the two main islands - Eysturoy and Streymoy from 1973, and the new bridge crossing the river Sandá. You can find the stamps in our catalogue.
Others take a different direction, such as France. Their 2018 EUROPA stamp has an artistic feel, where you feel like you are looking at a work in progress.

This stamp depicts two bridges, that both have great importance. The Pont de l'Europe, also known as the European Bridge, is a cross-border bridge that connects Germany and France, as it crosses the river Rhine. The bridge was built in 1960, and is seen as a symbol of reconciliation in Europe after World War II.
The Passarelle des Deux Rives, or the Mimram Footbridge, also connects German Kehl and French Strasbourg, and this bridge is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge was built in 2004, and plays an integral part in the Garden of the Two Banks. The bridge was famed for its role in the 2009 NATO summit.
The stamp is denominated at EUR 1.20, and can be found in our catalogue.
There are also issues like the one from Moldova, which is simply beautiful, and both stamps of this issue look like they could be the taken straight off the cover of a book.

The effects used for these beautiful stamps are quite simple, but they certainly work, and they inspire a feeling of adventure and exploration.
You can find these stamps in the catalogue.
You can see all the 2018 EUROPA stamps right here, and then you can be the judge of which ones are the best.

Beautiful images of Earth from space
On June 2nd, the French Postal Service issued this beautiful set of stamps. The set consists of 12 stamps, and each stamp depicts a different place on Earth. The pictures are not your average holiday photo though. The images are taken from the International Space Station between December 2016 and May 2017.

The resulting images are quite stunning, such as the above images of the Betsiboka River Delta in Madagascar, where the river passes through the mangrove forest to reach the Indian Ocean, or the view of the Himalayan Mountains in China, which makes them no less magnificent.

There is also the image of the Green River of the United States, which is the main tributary to the Colorado River, and when it is seen from above, you can really see the force of nature that carved out the path of the river over time. The same goes for the volcanic island in French Polynesia, shown with a view of the surrounding coral reefs, and it is truly beautiful.
Apart from all the nature, we also get to see the lights of Paris by night, with the intricate pattern of light dots, that seems microscopic, and puts life in perspective.
The stamps can be found in our catalogue right here.

Celebrating the 50th birthday of the Crown Prince of Denmark
On this very day in 1968, the future King of Denmark was born. This means that His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Frederik turns 50 today. POST Greenland celebrates this festive birthday event through a beautiful commemorative stamp.
As he is next in line for the Danish throne, the Crown Prince needs to have a relation to all parts of the kingdom. As Greenland is geographically remote from the rest of the kingdom, this might seem like a challenge. However, the Crown Prince has very strong bonds with Greenland, which has been built and nourished over many years.

For instance, in 2000, the Crown Prince planned and completed “Expedition Sirius 2000”, which was a four-month, 2800-kilometer-long sled expedition, spanning from Thule, or Qaanaaq, to Daneborg, where the Sirius Patrol from the Danish Navy is based, and from where they patrol the northern part of the kingdom.
While preparing for the expedition, the Crown Prince stayed in Qaanaaq, and the experience was eye-opening for the group. Though the inhabitants of Qaanaaq face bleak employment opportunities and a harsh environment, they showed enormous hospitality, and the experience left a lasting mark on the participants in the expedition. At the end of the expedition, the participants collaborated with Save the Children and Rotary to establish “Project Qaanaaq”. Through donations, the group was able to build a leisure and activities building in Qaanaaq, which was inaugurated by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess in the summer of 2004.
Based on the Sirius Expedition and subsequent trips to Greenland, the Crown Prince has built a strong relationship to Greenland itself, and in particular to the Greenlandic people. He is also doing his utmost to pass this relationship on to his wife and to his children, and the two youngest children even have Greenlandic names, solidifying the relationship.

The stamp depicts a photograph taken by Court photographer Steen Brogaard, showing the Crown Prince wearing the fine, white anorak that the Crown Prince wears on official visits to Greenland. Around the neck, the Crown Prince is wearing the Danish National Order (Dannebrogordenen). The royal commemorative is issued in sheets of ten identical stamps.
In addition, the stamp also comes in this beautiful souvenir sheet. This souvenir and collector’s item holds one copy of the stamp. Moreover, the Crown Prince’s monogram is printed and embossed in gold foil in all four corners of the souvenir sheet.

Below the stamp a minor engraving of a Sirius Patrol dogsled team has been added. The renowned Martin Mörck did this dogsled design.
The Stamp is denominated at DKK 50.00, and so is the souvenir sheet. Both items can be found at POST Greenland’s website.

Fish in Nordic waters - new series
Every other year, the eight Nordic postal services issue stamps in a series called “Norden”. This series is recognizable by the common logo on these stamps – the postal horn. For the 2018 issue, the common theme for the Nordic countries is “Fish in Nordic Waters”.
Greenland has occasionally been challenged in common themes, as the theme might not fit naturally with the distinctness of Greenland. However, this is definitely not the case for this particular theme. More than 260 species of fish are found in the waters of Greenland, so picking out just two has been a delightful challenge.

The two selected species were the Mackerel and the Herring, as these are both an important factor in the fishing industry, which plays a large role in Greenland, both in economic terms, and in terms of survival in the extreme Arctic winters.
The two very lifelike stamps are designed by the famous stamp engraver, Martin Mörck, who has been working with POST Greenland since 1995, resulting in more than 100 Greenlandic postage stamps so far. The designer decided that he wanted to recreate the fish in a natural way, where the fish are seen in motion, as they would behave in their natural habitat. The exquisite level of detail and the beautiful colors, shown against a neutral background, makes the fish stand out, resulting in a couple of beautiful stamps.
This issue will also be the kick-off for a multi-year series on Greenlandic fish, which will be continued in 2019.
The two stamps are denominated at DKK 12.00 and DKK 16.00 respectively, and they can be found at POST Greenland.

Sepac 2018 - Amazing Views
In 2018, the common theme for the Small European Postal Administration Cooperation, or Sepac, will be “Amazing Views”, and here Greenland really has something to offer. With so much unspoiled nature, the challenge is to decide, which amazing view will be displayed.

The resulting stamp is a beautiful depiction of a mountainous region in East Greenland, seen in shallow darkness, with the spectacular lights of aurora seen in the sky above. This sight is truly magnificent, and sights like this helps you understand the lengths that people go to, in order to experience this.
The stamp is made by an Austrian photographer and artist, Ewin Reinthaler, who has never before been involved in stamp design. Since his first visit to Greenland in 1995, Ewin Reinthaler has visited the country at least once a year, and although this is the first time his work is depicted on a stamp, he has experience with his work being published. In 1998, he and Hans Christian Florian published the book “The Unknown Mountains of East Greenland”, featuring a wide range of beautiful photographs of the area.
The Sepac stamp will be issued on May 25th. It is denominated at DKK 16.00, and can be found at POST Greenland directly.

Old Greenlandic bank notes
On May 25th, POST Greenland issues the second part of series on Old Banknotes, which started in 2017. The new issue consists of two new stamps, each depicting an old bank note from Greenland.
The first stamp is the 1-krone banknote, which depicts a reindeer in the center. The reindeer is depicted in the wild, seen in a rocky setting with the mountains in the background.

The stamp is shown here in a beautiful souvenir sheet. The souvenir sheet gives a representation of the entire banknote, which was originally printed in 1911. All the artwork is held in a dimmed blue shade, and the depicted reindeer holds a high level of detail, even with this relatively simple setup.
The second stamp in the set is the 5-krone banknote, depicting a polar bear in the center. Here the design was held in green, with a wild polar bear standing on an ice shelf.

The polar bear is probably the most iconic animal indigenous to Greenland, and hence it clearly belongs on these early banknotes. The polar bear is depicted in a centered circle, with the denomination of the banknote written around the circle, along with the name of the issuing authority.
The two stamps are denominated at DKK 38.00 and DKK 40.00 respectively. They are available in sheets of 10, as well as in these beautiful souvenir sheets. The stamps can be found at POST Greenland.

Catawiki Special:Conversation with a Seller: How Catawiki Became a "Moneymaker" for Dirk Sluis
Have you ever considered becoming a seller on Catawiki? We sat down to speak with one of the Dutch stamp sellers, Dirk Sluis to find out why he chooses to sell stamps on Catawiki. Dirk has been selling stamps on the online Stamp auctions for several years and recommends the experience to others. Discover why Dirk chooses to sell stamps on Catawiki and how it became a moneymaker for him.

[table]

How it all began
Since 1987, Dirk has been selling stamps through his small company in the Netherlands, Stamps DNS. However in 2011 Dirk found out about Catawiki through Daan Hartevelt, one of their in-house stamp experts. Daan saw that Dirk’s selection of stamps deserved to be seen by collectors all over the world and knew Catawiki’s Stamp auctions could bring Stamps DNS some fantastic opportunities for growth. Seven years later, Dirk uses Catawiki to successfully sell an average of 30-50 stamp lots per week. To date he has received over 5,000 positive reviews from buyers and earned a 100% feedback score.

Selling Stamps on Catawiki
[table=540]
[tr][td]
Dirk sells a range of collectable and special stamps on Catawiki. “I sell stamps in sets, collections and boxes from many countries, though most are European including the former Eastern Bloc.” But what was the first stamp he ever sold on Catawiki? “The first stamp I ever sold at Catawiki’s Stamp auctions was an ‘airmail seagull’ stamp,” he explains “I have since sold this set at least 10 times.” Dirk and his team often work 5 days a week offering up stamps for auction and it’s not unusual for stamps to sell for up to

The World's Smallest Stamp
We all know that stamps come in various shapes and sizes, but do you know exactly how diverse they are? This week we are focusing on one particular trait, as we are looking for the smallest stamp ever issued for actual postage.

The search for the world's smallest stamp takes us back to a time before Ford had produced the first Model T. Actually we have to go all the way back to the Battle of Gettysberg to find the smallest postage stamp ever issued.

In 1863, the first stamp was issued by Bolivar - one of the 9 states in the United States of Colombia. The state was formed as part of the United States of Colombia earlier in 1863, after the civil war in 1860-1862.

The first stamp issued by Bolivar, is the one shown here. It carries the Coat of Arms of Bolivar, with stars traced around the Coat of Arms. The stamp exists in two versions - a version with 6 stars below, as shown here, and a version with 5 stars below. Both versions are rare, with the 5 star version carrying the highest catalogue value.

The stamp doesn't look particularly special as seen here, but what makes the stamp special is the size - this stamp is no more than 8mm x 9.5mm in size, which is exceptionally small! A standard American stamp is 22.10mm x 24.89mm, which should give an idea of just how small this stamp must be.
You can find the stamp right in our catalogue.

Historic: Seven Stamps Depicting Watercolors by H.M. The Queen of Denmark
The Queen of Denmark has been an avid artist since the early 1970s, and watercolor has been her choice of style since mid-1970s. She has had her work exhibited many times throughout the years, from her first exhibition in 1988, to the most recent one, which took place in Nuuk in 2016.
For the first time ever, the artwork of Her Majesty the Queen, will be featured on Greenlandic postage stamps, and this historic event is especially significant, since the Queen has decided that the stamps should be issued for the benefit of charitable work in Greenland. In addition, it is most definitely the first time in world history that a monarch gets seven of her or his artworks issued on postage stamps – in just one day!
The Queen has a long-standing relationship with Greenland, and this stamp issue will benefit one of her patronages – the Association for Greenlandic Children, which is an association of volunteers, who have been working to improve living conditions for Greenlandic children for almost a hundred years.

Ever since her first visit to Greenland as a 20-year old, the Queen has felt a special connection with the country, and this shines through in much of her artistic work. The Queen was captivated by the Greenlandic people and their way of life, as well as the spectacular nature she found there, and this captivation has lasted ever since.
The Queen has made several visits to Greenland through the years, and the watercolors depicted on these seven stamps were made during two of these visits. The pieces of art were given to the Crown Princess, and they have been exhibited at the Katuaq, Greenland’s Culture Center in Nuuk.

The souvenir sheet holds seven stamps, each containing a rendering of one of the Queen’s watercolors. The seven stamps depict, among other things, the coastline of Ittoqqortoormiit (Scorebysund), as seen by the Queen, as the royal yacht passed by the area.
The stamps give a wonderful depiction of the Greenlandic nature. The blurriness of watercolors works perfectly well in this situation, where the nature is ever-changing, but the change happens gradually. We see the development of the landscape in the stamps, where we go from the ocean in the foreground, we have the central landscape, which is clearly in focus, and we see the further development of the country in the background, where faded mountains are depicted.
On the souvenir sheet, the seven stamps are accompanied by the Queen’s monogram and portrait of the Queen, gold-foiled and embossed. The sheet is sold at DKK 52.00, which includes an additional price of DKK 4.00, which all goes to the Association for Greenlandic Children.
These beautiful stamps are issued today, and you can find the stamps directly through POST Greenland’s website.

What do the Association for Greenlandic Children do?
Since 1924, the Association has worked to solve the challenges that many Greenlandic children and young people face. They help these children through the troubles they might be facing, helping to give the children a safe and secure childhood, as the Association sees this as the foundation for a good adult life with education, a job, and a well-functioning family.
The Association for Greenlandic Children works for the future of the children, and the goal is to ensure that no Greenlandic child grows up in poverty, abuse, or neglect.
